Toni Sailer Ambassador

Toni Sailer Ambassador

Champion skier and film star Toni Sailer was indeed a grand personality, but you haven’t met Park City local Wendy Roberts yet. This spunky red head would give him a run for his money when it comes to skiing, mountain climbing, local insight and fashion know-how. We recently had the opportunity to sit down for a Q&A session with Wendy. While Toni Sailer remains unforgotten, we’re willing to bet, after getting to know Wendy, you’ll agree this local skier is pretty unforgettable herself. We’re honored to call Wendy not only a Toni Sailer Ambassador, but a member of the Cole Sport Family.

In addition to being a local “ski bum” what other interests, professions and activities do you take part in?

Wendy: Wow, I’ve never thought of myself as a “ski bum!" Can one still be called a ski bum at my ripe ole age of sixty something? Anyway, since my one son, Tyler, (a former employee of Cole Sport who now works for their buying group, SSL, in Denver) flew the coop many years ago and since I don't currently work, I guess I qualify. I ski most every day during ski season, but am also a yoga devotee and an avid hiker. I pride myself as having climbed Kilimanjaro five years ago and made it up Mt. Timpanogos last summer. Much of my skiing and hiking experiences are done through The Park City Mountain Sports Club, which offers endless opportunities to participate in any number of sports outings.

Word on the street is you’re a ski apparel expert. You are a Toni Sailer Ambassador. What did it feel like when you were asked to be an ambassador for this iconic brand and what about the Toni Sailer brand is special to you?

Wendy: Yes, I guess I am a ski apparel expert. I was brought up by a mother who “adored the finer things in life,” wore Chanel like it was an everyday uniform and is responsible for giving me “the eye” for quality merchandise. As soon as Kathy Burke (soft goods buyer extraordinaire at Cole Sport and very dear friend) brought Toni Sailer ski apparel into Cole Sport, I knew this would be a line like no other. Not only eye catching, Toni is very sophisticated, highly technical (without looking it) and very innovative. The workmanship in each of their products is impeccable and every outfit has its own distinct style. To say the least, I was honored and probably even shocked (since I stand 5 feet tall in ski boots…not the typical model type) when Kathy asked me to be The Toni ambassador. Yet, I am constantly asked by people what designer I am wearing and where they can purchase such an outfit. Of course I say, “Toni Sailer and shout out “you can get it at Cole Sport!”

If you were to recommend skis, boots or equipment for women, what would you recommend?

Wendy: That’s a tough one since I am smaller than the average woman. Dynastar - Lange are my “go to” ski manufacturers. Their women’s lines are very responsive, yet strong enough to hold an edge. I love my Salomon wide bodies also! As far as ski boots go, I begged for a small shell size and Lange came through with a boot that fits without having to wear eight pair of socks.

What is one tip you would give someone who is new to the sport of skiing?

Wendy: If I were to give a tip to “newbie” skiers, It would be “if at first you don't succeed…try, try again.” It’s a lot easier today to learn with all the advances in ski equipment. But, by and far and the most important, I am a great proponent of SKI LESSONS by a certified teacher. I was fortunate to have parents who forced me into ski school until I was 12 years old, and I am grateful for those lessons.

We hear when it comes to your favorite place to ski, you are a Deer Valley Gal. What is your favorite run to ski at Deer Valley?

Wendy: I guess I am a True “Deer Valley Gal”. Deer Valley works on making your ski experience as pleasurable as possible. From the courtesy overnight ski storage (where most of their guest services’ employees were once doctors or lawyers) to a marvelous dining experience, D.V. excels. And, yes, the groomed slopes are perfectly manicured, but also offer some of the best tree skiing and steep and deep chutes. I also like the “skiers only” policy and of course appreciate the parade of “best dressed” in the world!

What’s your favorite spot to apres ski after a perfect day on the slopes?

Wendy: Being a “local” is a little different than someone who comes to visit. I am usually finished with my ski day by 2:00pm. When company arrives, or I am invited, I enjoy the bloody mary’s and fireside wine and cheese at The St. Regis.

Describe a perfect Deer Valley day.

Wendy: Just about every D.V. day is a perfect day. Of course, give me 8 inches of powder and I’m singing in the wind! And, there’s nothing wrong with a bluebird day either.

Why do you love to call Park City home?

Wendy: When I moved to PC 16 years ago, I moved primarily because I knew people here, the benefits of small town living (easy to meet people, safe environment) and proximity to a major airport. From fine restaurants to great shopping, Park City offers most of the benefits of a big city, and is surrounded by the most beautiful mountains anywhere! I get to live where many people come to vacation - what more can you ask for???

Favorite breakfast spot?

Wendy: When I splurge (calorie minded) on breakfast, nothing better than the whole grain pancakes at Squatters.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Wendy: I love to sing to the “oldies but goodies,” making sure no one is around to hear me.

Who inspires you on a daily basis and why?

Wendy: I am inspired by a dear friend who worked at Cole Sport, was a revered City leader and was beloved by many Park City locals. Unfortunately she passed away a few years ago. Candy Erickson exemplified grace under fire. Struggling with terminal cancer, Candy never complained and taught me to live every day to the fullest. I am reminded by her passion for life as I pass by The Tennis Center at The Marc (named after Candy and where I work out many days a week). Just seeing her name makes me smile.

Favorite quote or words you live by?

Wendy: I have two favorite quotes. The first is by Robert Frost and I have loved it since third grade. ”Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less travelled by, and that has made the difference”. Second quote of course by Peter Pan “ I wont grow up...”

What is an accomplishment that you are most proud of?

Wendy: My greatest accomplishment is probably making it to the last stage of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.

What do you love about shopping at and being a part of the Cole Sport Family?

Wendy: The Cole Sport “Family” treats me like family. Every time I walk into the store I feel like the employees are my best friends. Being a shopaholic, I could just roam the rooms (adorned by beautiful displays and endless merchandise) forever. I dream about being locked in at night so I can try everything on.

Is there any bit of wisdom you would like to pass on?

Wendy: Ahhhh, yes! Wisdom to pass on - Ski Like A Girl!

Do you have a nickname?

Wendy: I was called “Big Red” when I worked at The Ski Market in Boston.

What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done?

Wendy: Climbing Kili. To say I was afraid is an understatement. I couldn't believe I made it down alive!

What is your favorite type of dog?

Wendy: My favorite dog would have to be a Bichon Frise. They are very lovable, active, friendly dogs.

Coffee or Tea?

Wendy: Both! Coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon.

Favorite Midnight Snack?

Wendy: Favorite midnight snack - hopefully I’m asleep by then!
